Who the Hell We Think We Are
SLG Publishing's founder Dan Vado traces his comic book industry roots back to when he opened his first comic book store right out of high school. In the ensuing 30 plus years Vado has been everything from a convention promoter, a brick and mortar retailer, a mail-order retailer, a distributor, a writer and editor, and of course a comics and graphic novel publisher,
Vado counts among his major accomplishments founding the Alternative Press Expo, one of the first conventions to focus on indy and small press publishers, writing for both SLG as well as Dark Horse and DC Comics. SLG Publishing was distributing its products into venues like Tower Records and Hot Topic while other direct market publishers were still wondering if there were alternative places to distribute their books.
SLG has always made its bones on discovering new talents and the company has an impressive list of people that it counts as its discoveries. Jhonen Vasquz, Roman Dirge, Ariel Schrag, Bernie Mireault, Mike Allred, Evan Dorkin, Scott Saavedra, Serena Valentino, and Tommy Kovac are all people who got their start, or made thri first significant marks in the comic book business with SLG.
